Together with the Stamford Choral Society and the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra this concert will be one of the highlights of our season - Mendelssohn's 'Elijah'.
A choral composition clearly influenced by the choral masterpieces of Bach and Handel.
Originally the work was composed in German, but being commissioned by the Birmingham Festival, Mendelssohn had the libretto translated into English.
Two thousand people attended the first performance, which saw the composer himself take to the podium at the Birmingham Town Hall in 1846.
The work has a considerable dramatic impact with sublime choral writing, and is a hugely popular work that made Mendelssohn one of the greatest composers of sacred music.
